VP/Controller Opportunity @ National Life (Vermont)

Corporate Controller 

Reporting to National Life Group’s Chief Financial Officer, the Corporate Controller is responsible for leading a staff of financial professionals, with six direct reports. The Corporate Controller will be in charge of the company’s financial reporting, corporate accounting, investment accounting, sales reporting and analyst and accounting policy. He/She will drive innovation in all areas of the financial function, ensuring the company is taking full advantage of the latest tools in the accounting and finance planning within the company. The incumbent will often represent the organization in interactions with state insurance regulators, outside counsel and auditors, and peer companies and industry groups.

Key Responsibilities
•Engage the financial and accounting teams in a continued cultural and business transformation in line the company’s overall vision to drive a simplified, focused best of class approach to serving the life insurance marketplace.
•Continually assess effectiveness of each reporting unit controls, reporting, and accounting operations. Partner with direct reports to lead improvement strategies and tactics.
•Strengthen the financial and accounting team and continually upgrade the management bench strength.
•Drive National Life’s efforts to improve profitability, a core strategic priority.
•Coordinate accounting and financial reporting across the entire organization.
•Provide oversight and guidance to ensure that the organization’s accounting procedures and documentation comply with acceptable standards of accounting and provide accurate and meaningful disclosure of accounting policy and financial information. This includes keeping business leaders and staff in the organization up to date on emerging accounting issues and their impact on the business and processes.
•Continually review accounting policies and procedures to make sure that the company is complying with both GAAP and statutory accounting and with federal and state tax jurisdictions and other regulations including Sarbanes-Oxley.
•Develop and manage effective relationships across the enterprise.
•Create visible growth opportunities for the accounting and finance teams to develop into future leaders in the organization. Provide broad business exposure as a way of empowering high potential individuals.
•Partner with the CFO to identify ways to improve resource allocation. Collaborate with leaders across the company to build a world class financial organization. 

Desired Skills and Experience

Job Requirements
•Minimum of 15 years life insurance industry experience preferred. Willing to consider property and casualty experience.
•Big 4 Public Accounting experience would be a plus.
•Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
•STAT and GAAP reporting experience. SECOND filing experience is a plus.
•Strong investment accounting knowledge.
•Experience with SOX.
•Strong track record developing talent.
•Track record managing a sizable organization where the ability to influence is paramount to success.
•Knowledge of and experience with capital-markets related work.
